Description
A house built from slaves' hands sits on an active sugarcane plantation near Wallace, Louisiana. It is part of a museum called Whitney Plantation Historic District, and it is devoted to slavery in the Southern United States. The district, which includes the main house and other outbuildings, is preserved in St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana on the River Road along the Mississippi River. The plantation was started in 1752 by German immigrants Ambroise Haydel and his wife, and their descendants owned it until 1867.
The museum, comprising main portions of the 2,000-acre plantation property, opened its doors to the public for the first time in December, 2014.
